As the Design Director at UBS Financial Services, I lead an in-house marketing team as well as an off-shore team, outside agencies and consultants to create award-winning marketing materials for financial advisors and UHNW clients.

Mining financial advisor insights, the team identifies opportunities and overlooked segments to help grow net new money for the firm.

While the bulk of the work is run-the-bank, we do produce quarterly global Investor Watch pieces using proprietary research. Tactics include a report, website, social and video surround-sound.

Our research indicated that women are uncomfortable advocating for themselves financially and often abdicate financial decisions to their partners, thinking they are not well informed to do so. Working with the agency Heat, we created a website and a “Money Move’ quiz to show women that it is easy to be involved in financial decisions through incremental changes.

We also created an introductory video which was used at advisor events. Working within the elegant UBS brand, the video used the signature drawn-line style, restrained color to tell an empowering story.

Concept 1 – SmartRetirement Concept

We all want to be smart with our money, especially when it comes to planning for retirement. Fidelity® Managed Accounts is the smart way to manage your retirement portfolio and plan for your personal goals. 

We created an animated interactive infographic to deliver the nuts-and-bolts of what makes PAS-W smart. Sponsors can answer simple questions, and depending on their answer, serves up information in the order that matters to them most. This gives Sponsors a “customized” experience. Just like Fidelity Managed Accounts.

The Sponsor is prompted to answer a question. Questions are simple and direct. Answers are also simple, and served up via chart, graph, image, fact, animated graphic, etc. Along the way, the Sponsor can share stats and facts via email with co-workers. 

In the end, the Sponsor has an option to live chat with a Fidelity Rep to get the process started or send an email to a Fidelity Rep to get more information. 

Concept 2 – Retirement Survival Guide

We want to borrow the simplicity, safety, urgency, and excitement that’s inherent in a survival guide to show Sponsors that Fidelity® Managed Accounts is everything that their organization and their employees need to get retirement ready. 

Each Retirement Survival Guidebook chapter comes to life through stop-motion animation technique. The book sits on a desk. The desk represents employees and changes throughout the video—reinforcing personalization.

Chapter 3: SAI Strategic Advisers Inc  

VISUAL: The Fidelity Rep’s voice booms, “Fidelity is one of the largest, fastest-growing, workplace Managed Accounts in the industry.” Our paper employee drives onto the page. The VO details Fidelity’s experience. Facts build: “20 years,” “$12.9B in assets,” “over 3,675 clients.” Once erected, they turn into buildings. The landscape has changed, mountains are gone, we’re in a prosperous city that has grown out of expertise. With Fidelity® Portfolio Managed Accounts you can be confident that you’re setting up your employees, and your organization, for success.

The Capital One corporate mission is to bring transparency to the consumer bank and credit card market. Likewise, financial literacy for its customers is a driving theme. While marketing cards is the major objective, educating consumers on using credit wisely is also a goal.

Our ask was to create a series of financial education communications for the website that brought pertinent topics and tips that helped consumers understand the sometimes opaque world of finance. By investigating independent sources like NerdWallet, emails and web pages were created to help build a resource library that provided information on subjects like credit score and credit card debt. 

We created an infographic style that allowed us to synthesize complex themes into scan-able and easy-to-understand graphics that all fit within the One Voice corporate brand.

Utilizing my UX training, I created wireframes that reflected the responsive site as well as incorporated UX/UI best practices.

Microsoft has a wealth of information that allows parents, caretakers, educators and online safety advocates to keep their data and privacy safe. The "Do 1 Thing" website is a clearinghouse for content that is interesting and engaging.

As a request for proposal, my charge was to create a series of banner ads and social media ideas to promote all of Microsoft's online security tools. Because of the varied audiences, the client wanted a fun and upbeat campaign idea that would leverage the Microsoft live-tile style, branding illustrations, graphics, fonts & other assets.

As the writer and art director, I created a campaign that uses humor to stress that security is no laughing matter. You never know who can be "knocking" at your data door. Punchy type-driven banners drive the consumer to the "Do 1 Thing" website to get more information and free downloads.Through Twitter, we can engage consumers to share their "knock, knock" jokes and their tips to keep their privacy private.

UBS offers a personal credit card for its high net worth clients. Many of our clients are also small business owners who want the cache and benefits of a UBS card for their own business needs. So in the fall of 2019, UBS offered 3 business credit cards for existing clients.

Working with freelance art director Todd Killinger and video house JMX2, we created a break-through video announcing the launch by literally starting with a blank page. The UBS trademark white space became a canvas upon which the Cards themselves “create” a world of relief paper sculptures. We illustrated the benefits through two-dimensional shapes formed by the manipulation of space and shadow—with only a hint of color for accent. Ultimately a wholly new style exclusive to the Cards lives firmly within the recognized UBS brand.

Business to business DRTV spot are targeted to small business owners who were still using dial-up. (Yep, some still exist, like your dry cleaner.) Since these were offer-heavy, we created "donut" spots that allowed the client to swap in changing offers without having to revise creative. Spots were quick, kinda funny and graphic, and kinda successful.

Companion newspaper inserts quickly and graphically represented the offer in weekly media buys.

People diagnosed with RCC (renal cell carcinoma) are more than just their diagnosis. With lengthening survival rates, many patients cycle out of their first round of medication and are searching for that second or third line of treatment. Inlyta is that treatment that'll help people with RCC get back to their lives.

As the ACD running this new business pitch for CDMi, I worked with creatives to find a visual hook that speaks to the insight that patients are more than ready to get back to their lives. With knowledge that patients have strong family and support systems, we created a site rich in online tools that helped patients manage SEs and engage their support system to help them along on their journey.

I, along with my team, successfully pitched the account to senior brand managers at Pfizer and won the business for the agency to roll out.

Movantik was first to market for opioid-induced constipation. Frank, our lead character, is, in many ways, our target audience. He is a hard-working guy who was sidelined with a back injury. He doesn’t abuse opioids but depends on them to get to work and provide for his family.

Frank continues to resonate with our target audience and we were tasked with using him in subsequent spots. We came up with many different scenarios but the client felt that he was most effective on the job site.

Viagra was losing market share, even though it was the first drug in the ED category. Patients weren't asking for Viagra by name and doctors were writing more scripts for the competitor, Cialis. Viagra's patient marketing budget was shrinking (no pun intended) due to the drug becoming generic in the next couple of years. So our challenge was to get doctors on board to prescribe Viagra.

Research taught us that an ED conversation was an uncomfortable one for both doctors and patients. Doctors are using mobile devices more often in consultations so having a site that was easy to access was key.

To help facilitate this, we created an HCP (healthcare professional) site that had interactive features to ease the conversation between physicians and patients. There was an uptick in scripts written for Viagra.

Victoza is used to treat diabetes. Developing traditional vis aids for HCPs on mobile devices, makes it a seamless presentation for both the rep and the doctor. Having charts come to life with animation as well as making the table of contents and search features easy to access helps Victoza tell their story quickly.

When a person receives a catastrophic diagnosis, they are often in disbelief. In many instances, they are required to travel for treatment. With so many options out there, it is hard to choose that right hospital that suits both your illness and your own emotional well-being. At Johns Hopkins, #1 in specialties like Neurology, Rheumatology and Psychology, you find top notch care, and the people in place to help you plan your trip and treatments.

We created print ads which were empathetic and showed the power of Johns Hopkins behind you. Since we know 66% of adults research diseases online, we created targeted banner ads that drive to a microsite. Once at the microsite, you can easily get the information that is specific to your disease state.

As an art director working with the creative director, UX designer and project manager, I designed and created production PSDs for the Actemra responsive website and mobile sites. I produced pixel-perfect PSDs and helped the project manager create functional specs and style guide to hand off to developers.

After a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a holiday weekend, I decided there had to be a better way to see art in New York, without having to battle crowds. As I was waiting to buy tickets, I noticed that people ahead of me were taking selfies and posting them on Instagram. If social media can bring us together, well, can it also keep us apart when we need some alone time? I decided to create an app that can give you the space to see art without having to deal with too many people.

muSEE’em is an app that allows you to see how crowded a museum, or venue is before you get there so you can decide if it is worth visiting. By utilizing the GPS and geo-tagging in Instagram, Foursquare, Facebook and similar social media, you can easily see if a selected museum is too crowded. As the UX designer, I created the hypothesis, did online and in-person research, created user flows and content maps as well as wireframes for prototyping. I am continuing as the visual designer for the mocks and am currently working with a developer to create a higher fidelity prototype. In addition, I am in discussion to create ways to monetize this idea.

SWON (See Who's Out Now) is a social media app targeted to college students that allows friends to meet up at different locations.  It uses the latest mapping and GPS location as well as chat possibilities, location rating and friending options.

Designing an app icon for the iTunes store is a lesson in simplicity. Apple has clear rules pertaining to imagery and recognizability. It’s not unusual for people to base their initial opinions about your app’s quality, purpose, and reliability solely on the look of your app icon.

So it was crucial for me to create a simple, graphic and colorful icon that works at large and smaller sizes. After exhaustive research and working with my client on rounds of designs to hone the essence of the app, this icon for SWON was developed. 

By following Apples iOS Human Interface Guidelines, I created a mark that gives my client an own-able look in iTunes and in branding for their launch.

Biogen Idec has a suite of multiple sclerosis (MS) drugs and has become a resource for patients suffering from this disease. The patient program consists a series of in-person and online information programs for patients at various stages (MS under 50, just diagnosed). By delivering content rich presentations from doctors, nurses and patients, Biogen Idec helps engage patients and help with drug compliance.

By leveraging a honeycomb shape that is indicative of the MS drug molecule, I created an own-able look for all materials, from emails, print, powerpoint presentation and an online registration page. The campaign was met with positive feedback from both client and patients.

Working with a local Seattle agency, I was tasked with pulling together a quick set of concepts for the launch of WIndows 10 to developers. By considering the personas created by the UX designer, we discovered that not all developers are alike. Our targets fell into 3 categories: app developers who want to create for Windows products, Gaming developers and internal IT staff that need to depend on efficiencies and ROI for their organization. All with different needs and stories.

Acting as writer and art director over the period of less than one week, I can up with some sample banners, emails and landing pages to help spread that story that Windows 10 allows to create things like apps and games with one platform. This is a key initiative for Microsoft as they are continuing to see the value in mobile.

The Baltimore Orchard Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing fresh fruit and productive fruit trees to neighborhoods throughout Baltimore and to creating a greener, healthier, resilient and enchanting community. They work with schools, organizations, neighborhoods and individuals to provide fruit to under-served communities in what has been deemed a "food desert". Through social media, we connected with corporate donors and volunteers to "give and glean".

As the consultant, I designed and created a logo, website, information
one-sheet for donors as well as utilized an existing mobile app, Leaf Snap, to extend engagement with volunteers and donors.

Lucentis is a medication indicated for AMD (age-related macular degeneration) but received FDA approval for a new disease state, RVO (retinal vein occlusion). The RVO target audience is younger than those afflicted with AMD and are still active in the workplace. Also, we know that patients go straight to the internet after an initial diagnosis to learn all they can about the disease. For this low-vision audience, we created an interactive site with an auditory glossary, typesize changer and interactive tools to show symptoms of RVO.
